The Scarsdale Diet

The Scarsdale Diet is an extremely low calorie diet that is extremely restrictive in the types of food that one can eat. It was created by Scarsdale doctor Herman Tarnower. If you chose to participate in this diet, you must make sacrifices. There is a 14 day program that you must follow, followed by another 14 day program. The diet programs are already mapped out and no substitutes are allowed. In fact, if you eat an item that is not allowed on the Scarsdale Diet, you will have to start over from day 1.

Foods that are allowed on the meal plan include: grapefruit, assorted cold cuts, tomatoes, tuna, salmon, eggs, assorted vegetables, some types of cheese, poultry, toast and a few other foods. Everything else is not allowed including alcohol, potatoes, sugar, pasta and other foods. For a complete list of foods or a meal plan, you must purchase the book.

The Scarsdale Diet works by severely restricting your daily calorie intake and the fact that most dieters lose lots of fluids. While it is true that the Scarsdale Diet can be very effective in weight loss, it has many critics. It should be noted that the Scarsdale Diet is one of the most popular fad diets in the US and abroad. In fact, millions of people in France have used this diet to lose weight.

Pros of the Scarsdale Diet

This diet has been around since 1979 and since that time it has been used by millions. Many people have lost substantial amounts of weight in a relatively short period of time. While it is restrictive, generally speaking the food is easily available and convenient to prepare.

Cons of the Scarsdale Diet

The Scarsdale Diet can be extremely unhealthy for many people, especially those with diabetes and other health disorders. While many have lost weight using this diet, the majority of the weight loss is due to the loss of fluids which almost inevitably gets replenished after a short period of time. In addition, the restrictiveness of the diet makes it very difficult for many dieters to stick on the plan for any substantial period of time. There are plenty of other diets available that can have an impact on weight loss, without the negative side effects of extreme caloric reduction. For those looking to go on a diet or start an exercise program, consult with your doctor first.
