The Atkins Diet

With so many diets from which to choose, many people can easily be confused by the sheer number of diets standing between them and their weight loss goals. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to the “What is the best diet?” question.  This leaves many people seeking a diet that not only works, but works for them.  Quite often it’s a matter of trial and error.

The Atkins Diet has obtained wide attention and considerable press due to the fact that many people have seen results with it. While studies have shown that Atkins can deliver weight loss results, it is important to consider whether the results it can achieve mesh well with your long term lifestyle goals.

Mechanism of the Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet is based on eating lots of protein and fat, but fewer carbohydrates. Supposedly, when your body eats mostly protein and fat and a very low amount of carbs, the body is some how tricked into burning up the fats that are stored in your body. Since more fat is burned instead of carbs individuals ultimately lose weight. This process is called ketosis and it is the hallmark of the Atkins Diet.

Atkins Diet Pros

The Atkins Diet has received considerable attention and has been studied extensively. While there are still questions to be answered, generally speaking, the Atkins Diet has been proven effective in helping lots of people lose weight- specifically fat.

Another positive attribute of the Atkins Diet is that those that are on it, report that they do not feel hungry or as hungry as on a traditional low-fat diet. This suppression of appetite makes it easier for many people to stay on the diet and reduce their caloric intake over a period of time losing even more weight.

Atkins Diet Cons

While the Atkins Diet can help many lose weight, obviously a major drawback is that by cutting out a host of fruits and vegetables (carbs) the body is not receiving enough vitamins and nutrients and thus the person is not eating a healthy and balanced diet.

Another drawback is without fruits and vegetables, the body does not potentially receive enough fiber which can lead to difficulties with bowel movements. As with any diet, before you go on the Atkins Diet, talk with a physician to ensure it is right for you.
