Negative Calorie Diet
The Negative Calorie Diet is a diet that states a person can eat foods with negative calories in order to lose weight quickly and easily.
It is said that there are foods that require more energy to chew and digest than they contain in calories. For instance, celery is widely believed to require more energy in the amount of calories one takes to chew and digest it than it offers the body. It should be noted that all foods contain calories, however the term negative calorie foods specifically relate to the ratio of the total amount of calories a food has compared with the digestion of the food.
In theory, you can eat as much of negative calorie foods as you like and never increase your caloric intake, as a consequence, your body is not gaining calories, but expending calories, helping your overall metabolism. In addition, it is suggested that you should eat as much negative calorie foods as you like, simply because the more you eat the more calories you burn. For instance, if by eating an orange (a negative calorie food) burns a net calorie count of 25 calories, eating 4 oranges over the course of a few days will burn a total of 100 calories.
Some of the foods that are considered to have negative calories include: lemon, celery, watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, apples, onion, pineapple, radishes, garlic, strawberries, tomatoes and many more.
Pros of the Negative Calorie Diet
While you surely can’t survive on negative calorie foods, these foods are extremely attractive to those that snack a lot or would like to cut back on their daily caloric count. Since most of the foods are healthy, organic fruits and vegetables, even though they may not provide you with calories, your body can still use the vitamins and minerals.
Cons of the Negative Calorie Diet
Many critics state that you can not eat your way to weight loss. While negative calorie foods seem attractive, your body does need a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and types of food such as carbs, proteins and fats. While the Negative Calorie Diet can help one substitute food for snacks or a small meal, relying on negative calorie foods to lose weight is ultimately not healthy. In addition, by eating negative calorie foods, you can lose muscle mass. While it seems like a great idea, in reality the Negative Calorie Diet is not practical.
