Ephedra

Ephedra is an herbal supplement that is was recently used for weight loss. However, it is important to note that the US FDA has banned the sale of ephedra and any other products that contain this substance. Ephedra has been linked to heart attacks and strokes and is considered dangerous for use.

Ephedra originally comes from the evergreen plant. It is a widely popular Chinese herbal product that is mainly used for asthma and hay fever. However, when used in Chinese medicine the processing of the plant is very different than what was in modern weight loss supplements. Ephedra works by stimulating the brain. This has the effects of a raised metabolism, but also of nervousness and rapid heart beat. It also expands the tubes in the lungs- helping one breath easier.

There are no pros to using ephedra. Ephedra has been banned by the US FDA and is unsafe for consumption. Any effects of raised metabolism are weighted by risk of death, rapid heart beat and nervousness.

Ephedra has been banned by the US FDA for being unsafe for human consumption. There have been many deaths including those from heart attacks and strokes which were a direct result from taking this supplement. Before starting any diet or exercise program, it is always recommended that you consult with your physician.
